The Best Water Activities in Croatia

Take a Croatia Boat Trip
The beautiful harbour at Split

Croatia’s position on the Adriatic Sea means that it has a huge coastline relative to the size of the country as a whole. In fact, our coastline is 1,777.3 km (1,246 miles) and there are countless pristine beaches, sea cliffs, and beautiful hiking trails along the way. Our extensive coastline and beautiful weather have attracted more and more tourists in recent years, and many come to have fun in our temperate Adriatic Sea, enjoying a wide range of water activities. We’d like to offer a brief guide to some of Croatia’s best water activities below, and we hope we inform, entertain, and inspire a few readers to put Croatia to the top of their travel bucket lists!

Take a Croatia Boat Trip

While many of the other activities on this list are active and require a degree of athleticism, a Croatian boat trip is all about chilling out on the deck, enjoying the views, having a few drinks, making friends, and taking a little dive into the beautiful Adriatic Sea. This kind of trip is incredibly popular due to the rich variety of islands on Croatia’s coastline and the beautiful calm waters. If this sounds like a dream holiday and you’d like to know more, check out our range of Croatia boat trips.

It’s important to note the difference between one of our premium small boat trips and a luxury cruise. For starters, the boats are much smaller than cruise ships and there are significantly fewer guests. You won’t spend your time in your cabin, breathing re-circulated air; you’ll be soaking up the sun and fresh air on the deck! Perhaps one thing they have in common is the sense of luxury, but everything else about the experiences is vastly different.

Snorkelling and Scuba Diving in Croatia

The temperate waters (approx. 22-26 °C) mean that the Adriatic Sea is the biggest summer pool in the world! You can stay in the water for hours without getting too cold. This makes the Adriatic perfect for snorkelling and scuba diving. While the waters are calm and safe to swim in, there are lots of ancient shipwrecks; this makes for some of the most fascinating dives in the world. We’re not saying you’ll definitely find pirate treasure, but we’re also not saying you definitely won’t…

Perhaps the best think about swimming in Croatian waters is the colour and clarity of the water. In other parts of the world, the sea is often a dark bottle green or navy, but our waters are a bright turquoise blue and it’s almost as if the water is lit up from below. Believe all of the stunning images you see of Croatia are real and that people aren’t spending hours on photoshop to make our water such a beautiful bright blue!

Fishing in Croatia

Imagine fishing with views like this all around

Fishing in Croatia can be as active or relaxed as you like. Our waters are rich with life and make for the perfect fishing trip. With 400+ fish in the Adriatic, you can look forward to a wide range of exciting catches. However, due to a large number of tourists fishing in the sea, there are many protected species, so you can’t keep everything you catch. Any fishing boat you go out with will have all the appropriate licences and they will keep you right about which fish are okay to keep and which are protected.

Windsurfing in Croatia

Epic windsurfing on Croatia’s coastal waters

While many areas along Croatia’s coast are as calm and tranquil, we have several windy areas that are perfect for windsurfing and kitesurfing. These sports are so popular that there are numerous certified schools and companies scattered all along the coast — from Dubrovnik in the South to Umag in the North.

There is a strong wind in places along the Croatian coast. This wind is called Maestral (pronounced “Mistral”) and it is the perfect temperature to not worry about cooling down as you tackle the waves and water. The top spots for windsurfing and kitesurfing in Croatia are Viganj, Bol (on the island of Brač), and Baška (on Krk Island).

That’s all the time we have for you today. But that’s not all of the water activities Croatia has to offer. Perhaps we’ll write another guide in a few months that covers more amazing activities in Croatia… We hope you’ve enjoyed reading this blog and that you’ve learned a little more about our fabulous country. If we’ve sold you on our boat trips and you’d like to know more, please don’t hesitate to get in touch. What are you waiting for? Start planning your dream trip in Croatia with Horizon Sail!
