Day 1
Zagreb - the Capital City of Croatia - Visit with Horizon Sail Back to the Roots

Zagreb

Check into your hotel at 2pm to meet your fellow travellers and Trip Manager! After a brief tour introduction, enjoy your first included walking tour of Zagreb where you will hear all about how living in Croatia was during the Homeland war. You will also visit the World War II underground tunnels and learn about living under communism and being under siege during the liberation war. We continue in a more casual fashion visiting the infamous ‘Medvedgrad’ Brewery for your included dinner.

Spend the rest of the evening exploring this vibrant Capital City, take a stroll around the city centre, have a ‘Kremšnita’ custard delight, or see for yourself why Zagreb’s nightlife is rated among the best in the region.

Vukovar, Croatia - Visit with Horizon Sail Back to the Roots

Zagreb to Osijek via Vukovar

Depart Zagreb after breakfast and make our way to the ‘Hero City’, where you will witness first-hand the magnitude of destruction and pain Croatian people suffered at the hands of the Yugoslavian People’s Army (JNA). Your local guide will give real life experiences and stories whilst we visit important sights such as the old city hospital, the water tower, and finishing off at Ovčara memorial centre, where one of the biggest atrocities in recent European history took place.

After Vukovar we will make our way to beautiful Osijek situated on the banks of Drava river, offering memorable views and ancient history. Tonight we eat like Kings, living up to the expectation of the Slavonija region. The folklore music ‘Tamburaši’ will keep us company, bringing us back to the olden days with their songs A truly traditional evening connecting with the deep roots of Croatia.

Vukovar to Plitvice

Make the most of your morning by exploring Osijek old town on your included walking tour, stroll along Drava River or take some memorable photos on the top of the fortress.

After lunch we will make our way to Plitvice National Park, where we will be staying in the heart of the park itself! Take in the purest of nature with the smells and sounds of thick forests, surrounded by natural woodland. Relax yourself after dinner ready for your visit into the National Park tomorrow.

Plitvice Lakes, Croatia with Horizon Sail back to the roots

Plitvice to Zadar

Today we beat the crowds of tourists and make the most of exploring Plitvice National Park bright and early, giving you plenty of time to walk around the lakes. Take a boat trip across the ‘Veliko Jezero’, one of the deeper and higher altitude lakes in the park, or simply enjoy the tranquillity of the waterfalls. Make your way to ‘Veliki Slap’, the highest waterfall in the park, or have a lakeside pic-nic lunch. The day is designed for you to make the most of this national treasure. It is the most visited National park and one of the most recognisable places in Croatia, if not the whole of Europe.

After exploring the lakes we have just a short drive to Zadar, and our first introduction to Dalmatian region and culture. Your included sightseeing tour to get you up to speed with local sights and sounds (listen out for the sea organs) before we have our first taste of the local cuisine. You will be spoiled for choice and variety, and your trip manager will usually recommend fish – what Dalmatia is famous for!

Zadar (Optional trip to Krka Waterfalls)

Today you have a full day to explore this beautiful medieval city and to take some time to yourselves. Choose from a number of options – Take a day trip to Krka National Park and swim under the waterfalls, stroll down the infamous Kalelarga street where Croatia’s late, great Oliver Dravojević sang about, or sit by the Sea Organ next to the remarkable ‘Greeting to the Sun’. You can visit the forum, St. Dominus cathedral, Archaeological Museum of Zadar, and sports fans can check out the Krešimir Ćosić Hall named after the father of Basketball in the region, ‘Krešo’. Get some fresh fruit from the local ‘Baba’ at the markets, and make sure you don’t miss the world’s most famous sunset – so many options – you choose your day!

Split Old Town

Zadar to Split

Today we make our way to the City of Roman Emperor Diocletian’s palace, the second biggest city in Croatia and a proud capital of Dalmatian region – a City of sports, songs and culture. Split is the home of the famous Croatian music ‘Klapa’, it is bursting with ‘Konoba’ restaurants, and among local specialties fresh fish is the most popular.

You will explore the old town with our local expert guide and spend a day visiting the sights ranging from Roman times to most recent history. You make sure your cameras are charged and we’ll take care of the rest. Finish this night off with a traditional dinner at a local Konoba and perhaps hit some of the many bars and clubs.

Omis, Croatia - Visit with Horizon Sail Back to the Roots

Split to Pučišća via Omiš

This morning you we take a short ride to Omiš, a town famous for Cetina river canyon and it’s momentous pirate history! Check into our home for the week, the beautiful ship “Gradina” and get acquainted with the boat crew who will take great care of you during the rest of your trip.

Choose to jump onto our optional excursions of zip lining and white water rafting in the afternoon for the adventurous among you, or just spend the afternoon on one of the few sandy beaches around Dalmatian coast.

Later this afternoon we cruise south down the Dalmatian coast toward our second destination of the day, set at the end of a beautiful, natural bay, Pučišća. It was once voted one of Europe’s Prettiest Towns! Pučišća boasts some of the purest and whitest stone in Europe, and as well as being used for most of the local buildings, this famous stone was also used to build Diocletian’s Palace in Split, and the White House in Washington DC! Tonight we feast on an included onboard barbecue of local grilled meats and salads, and raise a toast as the sun sets over the bay.

Pučišća to Jelsa via Zlatni Rat, Bol

This morning we set sail around the coast of Brač, stopping to swim off the famous Zlatni Rat or ‘Golden Horn’. One of the most recognisable beaches on the Dalmatian Coastline, Zlatni Rat pokes out like a tongue of pebbles into the sea, continuously changing shape due to the waves, wind and sea currents. We will enjoy lunch at anchor, before cruising to our port for the night at Jelsa, on the island of Hvar. This bustling town was once a significant centre for shipbuilding and trade, and from here the best wines, olive oils and dried fish from Hvar would make their way around Europe.

This evening we head to a winery and organic farm on the UNESCO World Heritage Listed Stari Grad Plain. Here we enjoy an included olive oil and wine tasting, so you can truly appreciate what the island of Hvar has to offer. The authentic dish ‘Peka’ is on the menu tonight, and there is no place like Hvar to prepare a traditional feast for us.

Jelsa to Hvar

Today we sail around the north of the island of Hvar, to our next stop at Hvar Town. After enjoying a long swim stop at anchor on the Pakleni Islands, a water taxi will pick us up and take us to explore this beautifully maintained Venetian town.

Your included walking tour gives you the opportunity to visit the medieval Španjola Fortress, which has watched over the town since the 13th century, and enjoy the postcard views of the town and surrounding islands along with all the main sight in the old town.

Enjoy a pre-dinner cocktail with a view at one of Hvar’s many waterfront bars, and tonight, indulge in some of Croatia’s best nightlife as this buzzing town comes alive.

Hvar to Korčula

Today we continue south to the island of Korčula, the birthplace of famous explorer Marco Polo. Enjoy a leisurely lunch on board and plenty of time to swim in one of the beautiful bays near Korčula town. Korčula is famous for wine, and here is the perfect place to learn a little about some of the famous Croatian grapes over an included wine tasting.

Finishing the day with a sunset cocktail up high in part of the town’s medieval fortifications is simply stunning.

Mljet National Park

Korčula to Mljet

After a short morning sail, we arrive to anchor off the island of Mljet for the morning ritual of diving into that oh so blue water. We enjoy lunch on board before heading to the port of Pomena and to the stunning Mljet National Park. Here your entrance to the park is included, and we spend a leisurely afternoon exploring the two salt water lakes surrounded by lush pine forest. You have the option to cycle, kayak, or even head to the small island Monastery of St Mary. Head to one of the local eateries tonight, and later, toast another sensational sunset from the top deck.

Mljet to Elaphiti Islands – a night in the bay

We depart early today for the Elaphiti Islands, a small archipelago famous for it’s pristine scenery and secluded beaches. Today is a day of complete relaxation. We will spend the day swimming, relaxing and enjoying the most of our stunning Adriatic. We will spend a special evening on anchor tonight, and our wonderful crew will prepare the infamous captain’s dinner evening – 4 course local produce dinner with Croatian music, all included!

Elaphiti Islands to Dubrovnik

This morning we have a short sail, and after our final swim stop we arrive early to Dubrovnik with plenty of time to explore all that this amazing city has to offer. The ‘Pearl of the Adriatic’ is not the largest city on the Dalmatian coast, but it is certainly the most popular – you will soon see why! The history of this beautiful city is truly impressive, and you will have the option to join a historical walking tour with a local guide. More recently the city has become famous as the setting of King’s Landing in Game of Thrones. For fans of the show, there is also a GoT walking tour available. Maybe check out the ancient city walls which have stood strong for centuries, and protected the inhabitants from attack.

Tonight, choose your favourite local dish for dinner at one of the city’s excellent eateries. Tonight is our final night together, and we will party in style at Club Revelin, within the 15th century fortress.

Dubrovnik to Elaphiti Islands – a night in the bay

Check into our Premium category ship, and your new home for the week, from 11am. After meeting your Horizon Sail Trip Manager and fellow travellers, we set sail for the Elaphiti Islands, a small archipelago famous for its pristine scenery and secluded beaches. Today is a day of complete relaxation. We will spend the day swimming, relaxing and enjoying the most of our stunning Adriatic.

A special evening is planned for you tonight – we spend the night on anchor in a beautifully peaceful secluded bay surrounded by the glistening waters. We feast on an included onboard barbecue of local grilled meats and salads, and raise a toast as the sun sets over the bay. A perfectly laid back first day.

Mljet National Park

Elaphiti Islands to Mljet

After a short morning sail, we arrive to anchor off the island of Mljet for the morning ritual of diving into that oh so blue water. Hvar to Jelsa

This morning we sail around the north of the island of Hvar, to our next stop at Jelsa. We will enjoy a swim and lunch at anchor, before cruising to our port for the night. This bustling town was once a significant centre for shipbuilding and trade, and from here the best wines, olive oils and dried fish from Hvar would make their way around Europe.

Surrounded by lush and fertile forests and fields, Jelsa is today still one of the best places to try truly fantastic local produce. Split to Zadar

After an incredible sailing week of island hopping, we say goodbye to our wonderful boat crew and spend a morning in Split enjoying the best of the Dalmatian capital. We then head north for a short drive up the coast to Zadar. After checking into our hotel jump on your included sightseeing walking tour to get you up to speed with local sights and sounds (listen out for the sea organs) before we have our first taste of the local cuisine. You will be spoiled for choice and variety, and your trip manager will usually recommend fish – what Dalmatia is famous for.
