The Destination: Hvar Town
Hvar has become an international hotspot in recent years – and this trendy island destination is famous for the superyachts, celebrities, day bars and nightlife. For much of its history, Hvar Town played second-fiddle to Stari Grad on the other side of the island. Slowly but surely it rose to importance as a naval stronghold for the Venetians and this influence is immediately obvious in the architecture of the town. The Cathedral of St Mark overlooks the largest town square in Dalmatia, on which the ancient Arsenal and theatre also sit – a testament to the fact that this was once a very important place. There is plenty of time to explore this small town during your Horizon Sail week in Croatia.
The View: Pakleni Islands from Spanjola Fortress
Take the short walk up to the medieval Španjola Fortress, which has watched over the town since the 13th century, and enjoy the postcard views of the old town and surrounding Pakleni islands. For a few Euros, you can visit inside the fortress and view the small military display there.
The Drink: Lavender infused Gin + Tonic
Enjoy a drink at one of the fabulous waterfront cocktail bars, and enjoy the views of the boats buzzing about the port. Aloha cocktail bar has one of the best views in town, with waterfront seating to soak up the sunshine and atmosphere. With one of the best gin selections in town, be sure to try the lavender-infused gin. A perfect summer-sip on an island famous for its lavender production.
The Food: Fresh seafood
For centuries, the best wines, olive oils and fresh produce from Hvar would make its way around Europe from these ports. Surrounded by fertile forests, fields, vineyards and sea, there are some great eats to be enjoyed here. We love the fresh seafood and steaks at George’s Garden, or try the truffle and prosciutto pasta at Hanibal amongst the atmosphere of the town square. Superb.
The Experience: Hula Hula Bar and Carpe Diem Club
This island has been famous for its nightlife since well before Prince Harry famously jumped into the swimming pool of a club whilst fully clothed. During the day, checking out the party at Hula Hula Bar is a must for anyone who likes a frozen cocktail and dancing in the sun. By night, Carpe Diem Club is the place to be, with deep house music pumping through the lit up trees on this club’s small island home.Back to Posts
